Life expectancy hit another record high in 2025, according to new provisional federal data.
In the report, released July 2, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics estimated 3,094,593 people died in the United States in 2025, making the death rate 4.6% lower than in 2024, marking a record low.
The decreased death rate was seen for all age groups and for both males and females, according to the data.
The findings are based on preliminary death certificate data received and processed by the National Center for Health Statistics, meaning they may change following further review of the data. Final annual mortality statistics are expected later this year, the report added.

The report also listed the leading causes of death in 2025, with the top three being estimated as heart disease with 694,708 deaths, cancer with 622,832 deaths and unintentional injuries with 184,265 deaths.

The latest data comes as "longevity" remains a buzzword in the health and wellness space, as more people are focusing on ways to live longer.
Death rates increased around the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as more than 1 million people died of the disease; the illness has since dropped from the top causes of death in recent years. It previously ranked as the fourth leading cause in 2022 before dropping to 10th in 2023.
