Prince Harry is facing another major setback after his move back to the U.K., as reports reveal that his private security team was never informed about a 2023 assassination threat from the terrorist organization al-Qaeda.
Prince Harry’s legal representative stated that the chair of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) knew Harry was the target but failed to share the intelligence with Harry’s private security detail or with U.S. authorities while the family was living in the United States.
At Least Six Threats or Plots Concerning Prince Harry Since 2007
According to HELLO!, the published records show that Prince Harry has faced at least six distinct plots or threats originating from the Taliban, al-Qaeda, or their followers since 2007.
These incidents included plans to assassinate Harry in 2023 during his time in America, along with an official operational plot announced by a Taliban spokesman in 2012 to either kill or kidnap the prince.
Furthermore, threats were made in 2010 to shoot down Harry’s Apache helicopter and capture him if he returned to combat in Afghanistan, where he served in 2007–2008 and 2012–2013.
Ahead of the family’s return to the U.K., Harry wrote to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood in August and asked her to take direct charge in deciding if his family should receive official police protection. This privilege was removed when he stepped back as a working royal.
This security dispute has been ongoing since Harry and Meghan moved away in 2020. At the time, Harry assumed his official guards would remain, writing in his memoir Spare, “Meg asked me one night: ‘You don’t think they’d ever pull our security, do you?’ Never. Not in this climate of hate. And not after what happened to my mother. Also, not in the wake of my Uncle Andrew.”
Harry continued, “He was embroiled in a shameful scandal, accused of the s*xual assault of a young woman, and no one had so much as suggested that he lose his security. Whatever grievances people had against us, s-x crimes weren’t on the list.”

According to the Daily Express, despite his belief that state protection would stay intact while visiting the U.K., the guards were removed upon his departure. This started a years-long legal fight to restore security for his family.
