Scott Wolf and his estranged wife Kelley recently enjoyed a “healing” family reunion with their three children, and now he’s giving a little more insight into why he publicly shared the information on social media.

“While I would never have wanted anything to have been made public, I guess it just felt like our family deserved to have things not just sit in some kind of awful dark place in terms of perception,” Scott tells PEOPLE in a new interview.

In the Feb. 20 photo he posted on Instagram, the family is at Universal Studios Hollywood, posing arm and arm in front of the park’s iconic globe fountain. Scott and Kelley, who have publicly clashed since their June 2025 split, are both smiling beside their three children: Jackson, 16, Miller, 13, and Lucy, 11.

“Healing,” Scott captioned the snapshot, along with five blue hearts. “Thank you @unistudios for an epic day at the park! So much fun!”

Kelley posted a similar photo with the same caption and even tagged her ex.

“We are committed to being honest, authentic, and loving to ourselves, to each other, and for our children,” Scott said in a statement to PEOPLE at the time. “We thank everyone for their love and support.”

Until recently, it had been a difficult journey for the Wolf family.

Scott, 57, and Kelley, 49, separated in June 2025 after 21 years of marriage. At the time, the *Real World* alum praised her husband as “one of the best fathers I’ve ever known and one of the best partners a woman could have the privilege of sharing life with.”

But days later, Kelley was placed on an involuntary “5150” psychiatric hold in Utah as Scott filed a restraining order against her (which he later dropped). Then in August, she was arrested for alleged online harassment of her estranged husband, as well as his friends and family.

Subsequently, Scott was awarded temporary sole custody of Jackson, Miller, and Lucy in addition to a protective order against Kelley stating she could not contact him or the children. Days later, she was charged with violating that order when she attempted to contact their middle son through a friend.

But there was a silver lining to all the family turmoil. In September, Kelley was ordered by the court to spend 60 days in a mental health facility. Three months later, Scott requested to dismiss the protective order against her, which was granted in January.

And now, the “healing” begins.

“While the work we’re all doing is really the only thing that really matters, it had been made public,” says Scott, who's currently starring on the Fox medical drama *Doc*. “While it’s impossible to go into any real detail about much of any of it, I love all of those four people and all of those four people love each other. And so that’s really what matters most.”
