Scott Wolf is opening up about his recent reunion with ex Kelley Wolf and their three kids.

On Feb. 20, amid their ongoing public divorce, the Doc actor, 57, and Kelley, 49, spent time with their sons Jackson, 16, and Miller, 13, and daughter Lucy, 11, at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. That day, Scott released a statement to PEOPLE about his family's "healing," and now he's sharing insight into that decision.

"While I would never have wanted anything to have been made public, I guess it just felt like our family deserved to have things not just sit in some kind of awful dark place in terms of perception," Scott tells PEOPLE now. "While the work we're all doing is really the only thing that really matters, it had been made public. While it's impossible to go into any real detail about much of any of it, I love all of those four people and all of those four people love each other. And so that's really what matters most."

Scott is no stranger to life in the public eye: he made his breakthrough at 26 in Party of Five in 1994. He's now back in the spotlight thanks to his role as Dr. Richard Miller in seasons 1 and 2 of Fox's medical drama Doc, which was renewed for a third season on Monday, March 9.

"It's such an incredible group of people, so I'm super excited for everyone that the show gets to continue," Scott says. "Whether Richard is around for one or a hundred more episodes, it's been a huge gift."

Asked how he defines success in this chapter of his career, he says it's "always" been "feeding my children." He adds that he only had "two real goals" for himself when he was first starting out, the first being finding a balance between his family and professional lives.

"I knew that was going to be important to me, so one goal was trying to keep myself in a place where I could always make choices based on the things that I wanted to do, not because my kids needed braces or something," he says. "That's a huge luxury."

Scott says his second goal was making sure he'd "get better" ever time he took a job. Those two goals continue to drive him.

"It's like, 'What's going to pull me out of the house with my kids?' It's got to be something worthwhile," he says. "So, success is being part of a great team, being in service of telling a great story that might matter to people. I think some of the shift is that there are no real benchmarks anymore. Success isn't measured anymore by anybody else's perception of me or where I arrive or don't arrive, or what medium I'm working in. It's all, 'Did I stretch myself and try and get a little better?' That's a success."

Despite his continued career success, not to mention his status as a heartthrob in the '90s, he says his kids have remained largely unimpressed. When he showed Lucy a video he posted on Instagram on Monday, March 9, featuring throwbacks of him from the '90s, she told him, "I bet you think you're so cool."

"It's funny, you go through different periods in this business, and sometimes you go through a quieter period of time, and then at breakfast, they're like, 'You got to get a Marvel movie or something. What are you doing?'" he says. "And now that there's more [with Doc], now they're just annoyed by it. It's like, 'Well, what about the whole wanting me in a Marvel movie?'"

He might not be a film superhero yet, but Scott is planning to take his kids to the Doc set to see him in action soon.

"I'm bringing my oldest back with me this next trip as we wind down season 2," he says. "They've all had a chance to be on set at various points here and there. They've all done the marker, the slate, which is the rite of passage for any visiting kid. But I love having the chance to have them come around, especially in an environment like this one where everyone's just so great and so talented and kind. I talk about them nonstop, so everyone up there is just like, 'Bring them already.'"

With season 3, he says, "the hope is that there'll be a lot more time to get them up there."

New episodes of Doc premiere Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
