Last week, Prince Albert’s cousin, Antoine de Massy, was found dead in a public garden. The 29-year-old was the grandson of Princess Antoinette, the older sister of the late Prince Rainier.

Now, Monaco authorities have charged a 42-year-old man with involuntary manslaughter and failure to assist a person in danger. According to Monaco Life, Monaco’s prosecutor general, Stéphane Thibault, says the suspect—a Ukrainian national who has lived in Monaco for three decades—denied allegations during police questioning. Thibault said, “He was brought before a judge but has so far declined to answer any questions. The judge has charged him with failure to assist a person in danger and manslaughter—for acts that may have occurred at different times—and remanded him in custody.”

Thibault said in a statement to Monaco Matin today, “the death was caused by a fall of 13 meters from the square,” with the publication noting that Massy “could have fallen from the square on Boulevard du Larvotto into the green space below.” The prosecutor’s office did not explain how the fall occurred, or what actions that the suspect undertook that could have led to the fall. An investigation has been opened to establish the “sequence of events that led to Antoine de Massy’s fall,” per Thibault.

Monaco’s royal family is mourning the young man. “Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène learned with sadness of the death of Antoine de Massy, aged 29, grandson of Princess Antoinette, the elder sister of Prince Rainier III,” the Prince’s Palace said in a statement after Massy’s death. “Their Highnesses share in the grief of his family and loved ones and extend their sincere condolences at this painful time.”

No funeral details have been revealed at this time.
