Lisa Barlow opens up to PEOPLE about her debut single "Baby Gorgeous"

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star says the song "started as a pep talk"

"Baby Gorgeous" is out now

When you ask Lisa Barlow how she's doing, she offers a playful, sultry reply: "I'm baby gorgeous good."

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star's response couldn't be more on-brand. Not only has she become synonymous with this adage on the reality TV series, but she's turned it into her first single.

Ahead of the seventh season of the Bravo reality series, Barlow, 51, dropped her single "Baby Gorgeous," a dark-pop anthem teeming with self-confidence. "'Baby Gorgeous' started as a pep talk where it's taking things I say to people when I'm giving them a pep talk, how I feel about someone's energy," the serial entrepreneur tells PEOPLE.

Fans will also be able to see Barlow's foray into music on the upcoming season of RHOSLC. "We document the entire process," says Barlow. "Well, most of the process. There's some stuff that we couldn't capture due to timing, but a lot of it. I was just like, 'It's the right time.'"

For the song, Barlow teamed up with songwriters JakDel (real name Jake Pedersen) and Jed Jones. "They've worked with the greats, like Brandon Flowers from The Killers, Post Malone and Benson Boone," she says. "They're all so talented.

Barlow is thrilled with how the song has surprised people: "It's a mood changer, and it's a vibe."

Below, she speaks to PEOPLE about which pop stars she wants to collaborate with, her infamous tagline and what her kids think of her new song.

PEOPLE: What inspired you to make music?

BARLOW: You know, I have been a lover of singing and music since I was a little girl. I did a lot of community…not really theater. It was more like mixed-up musicals where I would sing a lot. So I started at a really young age. And I'll never forget the first part I got. I was in fourth grade, and I had the prettiest music director ever. She was picking someone for the solo — and I still remember the solo by heart — and she picked me. I was enamored by her. I love singing in front of people, and I've sung my whole life. My sister, Denise, has perfect pitch. She's done backup for some amazing, well-known people. I won't name-drop for her, but big-deal people. So, it's just something we've always done.

PEOPLE: This is your first single — why release it now?

BARLOW: The last few years. I didn't get to sing as much. You'll see my journey [on RHOSLC]. I have a thyroid issue. It's super hyperactive, which is great because it kept me skinny my whole life, but it affects your vocal cords. It really was harder for me to sing the last three or four years, and then I was like, "No, I'm going to work with a vocal coach, and I'm going to get back to where I was." I used to have a very vast range, and we're working on getting it that way.

But I grew up playing the flute, playing the piano, all the right things you should do in music. I really wanted to play the drums, but my parents were like, "No, stick with the flute." But I am not a bad drummer either. For me, it's so cool to have this stage of life, the opportunity to work with really cool people. And I love to write music. I'm way more creative than people know, and I love to write music, too. To actually bring the song to life has been amazing.

PEOPLE: For those who are just getting to know you, what does the phrase "Baby Gorgeous" mean?

BARLOW: "Baby Gorgeous" is what I refer to Henry, my youngest son, as. He's just my "Baby Gorgeous." "Baby Gorgeous" is a whole vibe. Looks are always subjective. Everybody has a uniqueness about them, and everyone's beautiful. But I think for me, being "Baby Gorgeous" is just a vibe. I talk about it in the song…you have magic energy. If you really listen to the lyrics of the song, it's almost a manifestation of like, "I'm just baby gorgeous. If I feel it, it happens. I don't walk, I strut." It's like a vibe of being uber self-confident, knowing who you are, knowing what you deserve and what you can have happen.

PEOPLE: There have been a handful of Real Housewives who have released music over the years. Was there a fellow Housewife who inspired you to do it?

BARLOW: No, nobody on Housewives, there's so many talented Housewives. Candiace Dillard is a beautiful singer. Her vibe is so different than mine, but I appreciate it and love it so much. I went on a girls' trip with Luann, and I felt like we sang nonstop together. Luann [de Lesseps] is infectious. She's literally storytelling through song all the time. Melissa Gorga's song is amazing. I think Erika Jayne is just a baddie bitch. I love that she refers to herself as c---, which is 2020s c---. It's not '80s because that's gross. But they all have their own voice and goal in music.

I came onto the Housewives platform already having such an identity with music, who I know in music, who I relate to in music, and what my vibe is, and I think there's something to be celebrated with everybody because there's a uniqueness to what everybody's doing. I mean, I saw Kandi [Burruss] at BravoCon, and I was like, "Girl, I can sing your songs. We have to sing together."

PEOPLE: Is there a celebrity interaction you've had with your "Baby Gorgeous" tagline or the song that you've loved?

BARLOW: The girl from Ozark, [Julia Garner]. She was on [Live with Kelly and Mark], and she was talking to Andy Cohen, and she was like, "Hi, baby gorgeous," emulating my voice. I have a very distinctive voice. I actually sound like all of my sisters. But we have a very distinctive cadence and rhythm to our voice, and it's always funny when I hear people sound like me back to me. That's one that comes up, and then there's also one of the girls from Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan. She was doing a Vogue interview. There's a girl that imitates me a lot online, and she references that, and I think it's so hilarious. But Nicola's amazing. I was like, "We have to meet up next time I'm in London."

PEOPLE: When it comes to “Baby Gorgeous,” which pop stars are you channeling?

BARLOW: I feel like I'm in my own lane. I love Dua Lipa. I think Dua's got sucha vibe that I resonate with. I love RAYE and her music. "Ice Cream Man" is one of my favorite songs. For DIRECTV, I sang a little Sabrina Carpenter, and I love her cutesy, kitschy everything. But there's so many people to be inspired by. I actually am obsessed with Lionel Richie. John took me to Lionel Richie, I think it was last summer or the summer before, and I was on the Jumbotron so much because I was singing every lyric to every song. I mean, it was comical. I have two more songs coming out ... I think Giorgio [Moroder] really introduced the synthesizer into music in the '80s and early '90s. There's something to be said about just feeling a beat, feeling an energy when I'm writing and singing.

PEOPLE: You have more music on the way. What can you tell us about your upcoming songs?

BARLOW: They're different. One of them [is] a tribute to just being in love and what that means. Luckily, I've been married for a long time, and I get to be with my person. People that sing the songs that I have coming out will feel like it's applicable to them and their relationships, whether they're dating someone, found the love of their life or [were] obsessed with that euphoric feeling of being in love. I think you're going to feel that in the next song.

PEOPLE: What do your kids think of "Baby Gorgeous?"

BARLOW: My kids are obsessed. Jack came with me to the Balmain dinner in New York. Our driver was waiting for us. We got in the car. He synced up his phone to the sound system in the car, and he was scream-singing "Baby Gorgeous" with me loudly. The driver was into it. And he was Snapchatting the entire thing. Jack came home after I sent him not the last iteration of "Baby Gorgeous", but close to the last. He walked in the kitchen, and he goes, "I can't even believe this. My mom is a pop star," and he was so happy. Their friends got to come to the studio with me and watch the process. It's been like a whole thing. I love it. And it's really got Jack... Jack's been playing the guitar. And Jack's been DJing since he was 4 years old. Jack started DJing really young, so [he's] like, "Mom, I'm remixing this." And he works with people that work with Drake, in music. He just has a really good Rolodex for his age.

PEOPLE: Since "Baby Gorgeous" came out, have you seen any TikTok videos or edits of the song that have been your favorite?

BARLOW: There's a girl on Instagram that did the lounge version of it, and I messaged her, and I'm like, "I love this. It's so good. It's beautiful."

PEOPLE: As an artist, who do you dream of collaborating with?

BARLOW: There's so many people. I have a very distinct voice and a unique cadence to it. I think RAYE has such a sexy, cool voice. Dua Lipa, I think her range is very similar to mine. They've been doing this a lot longer than me. I would never compare myself to them. But I work really hard. I love Ella Langley right now.

When I hear Ella singing that song [“Be Her”], I tell my husband, I'm like, "She is singing that about herself," and I'm like, "But it's also, she's singing it kind of like ‘Baby Gorgeous' where you can sing it about yourself, but other people, they can sing it about themselves.'” So I love singing “Be Her.” She's someone I would want to sing with. I'm working on "Be He" with my vocal coach so I can sing it just like her.

PEOPLE: You're planning to release a music video for "Baby Gorgeous." What can you tell us about it?

BARLOW: It's so good, and you're going to be obsessed. We're doing a full-on music video. It's going to be amazing. It's exactly the way it should be based on "Baby Gorgeous." I sent this song to my friend Christian [Juul Nielsen of womenswear brand] Aknvas. He used to be a creative director for Dior and worked with Oscar de la Renta, and he's like, "I see 2026 Marie Antoinette, over-the-top, decadent, boss, fabulous." He was spot-on. It's so baby gorgeous. Anyone who really feels the song and puts it on repeat is going to relate to this video in every capacity.
