The Lake County Sheriff's Office said that human remains found in Lake Township on Tuesday, May 4, were "ancestral in nature" and not part of a crime.

"After examination, the remains were determined to be ancestral in nature. The remains were respectfully secured and released into the custody of the anthropologist," the sheriff's office said in a release on Tuesday night.

Lake County deputies were dispatched at about 4 p.m. to an area on South Star Lake Drive, between the 16000 and 17000 blocks in Lake Township, southwest of Baldwin, after a report that human remains had been discovered during an excavation project, the release said.

Representatives from the medical examiner’s office, including an anthropologist, also responded to the scene.

The area was temporarily closed during the investigation, but later reopened to the public.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Lake County 911 Central Dispatch, Mid-Michigan Medical Examiners Office, Lake County Emergency Management, anthropologist Mindy Bailey, Dietz House Moving Engineers Inc., Michigan State Police, and Lake Township Fire.
