- *People We Meet on Vacation *is Emily Henry's first book-to-screen adaptation.
- The romantic comedy is currently dominating the Netflix streaming charts.
- Several of the author's other best-sellers are also headed to the screen.
Emily Henry's *People We Meet on Vacation*, which debuted Jan. 9 on Netflix, marks the best-selling author's first novel to get a screen adaptation. It's currently No. 1 on the streamer's movie charts, an indication that Henry's fizzy romances have as much appeal on the screen as on the page.
The good news? There are plenty more on the way, with *four* of Henry's novels currently in development.
Wondering which of her stories are coming to life on the big (or small) screen next? Here's the rundown on her upcoming adaptations.

In April 2023, *Deadline* revealed that 20th Century Studios will adapt Henry's 2020 novel *Beach Read *into a feature film, with *People We Meet on Vacation *screenwriter Yulin Kuang set to write and direct. Henry and Kuang confirmed the news on Instagram. "Who's ready to cry," reads the caption.
*Beach Read *is a meta-romcom, a beach read about, well, writing a book someone might enjoy reading on a beach. It centers on January Andrews, a romance author who moves into a summer rental across from literary fiction writer Augustus "Gus" Everett. Both are stuck in creative ruts, so they make a deal to swap genres in the hopes of reigniting their creativity.
In January 2026, Kuang revealed to *Swooon* that the *Beach Read *film adaptation is now in the casting stage.
Book Lovers (2022)

In March 2023, just days before the *Beach Read *adaptation news dropped, word broke that *Book Lovers *was also headed for the big screen. The adaptation landed at Tango Entertainment, the production company behind films like *Aftersun *(2022) and *Together *(2025).

First look: Emily Henry's next novel goes meta — really meta

The 2022 novel follows Nora Stephens, a career-first literary agent who lives and breathes books. When Nora agrees to spend a month in a small North Carolina town with her sister, she doesn't expect to keep crossing paths with Charlie Lastra, a moody book editor who brings out an unexpected side of her.
Henry shared the news on Instagram and thanked the team behind the project. "I'm so grateful Tango wants to make this," she wrote. "I'm so glad they understand why this kind of movie is important. It's not about a formula, any more than any other genre, though that's how romances often get oversimplified in discussion. Some people scoff at the concept of a genre with a guaranteed 'happy ending,' but the truth is, we all know the characters' lives go on after the book ends."
She went on to praise her collaborators for recognizing the impact and emotional core of her story. "I'm so happy to have partners for this project who get that, who value the essential role this kind of art plays in our lives," Henry added. "They understand why THIS story, about two broken people trying to open themselves up enough to be truly known, matters to me and us."
The screenplay will be written by Sarah Heyward (*Girls*, *Nobody Wants This*). Casting and directing details have not yet been announced.
Happy Place (2023)

*Happy Place *is officially headed to Netflix. In June 2024, it was reported that Jennifer Lopez's production company, Nuyorican Productions, had picked up the rights to adapt the novel as a series. Lopez confirmed the project herself on her Instagram Story, adding a sticker that read, "Can't wait!"
The 2023 novel tells the story of Harriet and Wyn, former fiancés who agree to fake that they're still together during a trip with friends. Henry previously told * *that she envisioned the book as "really funny and screwball," but soon realized the story was more layered than she'd expected.
"There are these two characters and they love each other so we have to give them a really good reason to have broken up. It was just not the funny, light book that I set out to write," Henry said. "A lot of the revision was me trying to find the sense of the humor in the book and those screwballer, slapstick moments in this scenario that is kinda ridiculous. A lot of it was just trying to get the right mood and tone."
By January 2026, the project had changed direction, with Henry revealing to Tudum that she would pen the script for the project, which will be a movie, not a series.
"The entire team there has been so passionate about, dedicated to, and supportive of *People We Meet on Vacation* from the jump, and getting to do it all over again — this time writing the scripts myself — has been a thrill," she said. "I feel so lucky to have found this home for these films, among people who believe deeply in the necessity and power of this kind of story."
Lopez is still attached as a producer.
Funny Story (2024)

*Funny Story *hit shelves in April 2024. Three months later, Henry revealed she'd be writing the film adaptation herself.
Fans of the novel know it follows children's librarian Daphne, whose fiancé leaves her for his childhood BFF, Petra. With nowhere else to go, Daphne ends up moving in with Petra's ex, Miles, and the two cook up a fake romance to make their exes jealous. But as anyone who's read a romcom knows, fake feelings have a way of becoming real.
The cast and director haven't been announced yet, but the project is set to debut on Netflix.
