Eva Mendes is remembering how she kept her second pregnancy hidden back in 2016

The actress and mom of two posted a series of photos on her Instagram as she joined the social media trend of showing off 2016 photos

Mendes welcomed her second daughter, Esmeralda Amada, with partner Ryan Gosling

Eva Mendes is recalling how she kept her second pregnancy a secret nearly a decade ago.

The Hitch actress, 51, shared a carousel of photos on her Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 15, as she participated in the viral social media trend of posting pictures from 2016. In her first slide, Mendes could be seen sitting down, smiling as she layered a few blankets over her lap.

"2016 — I was pregnant. This is me hiding my belly," she wrote over the black-and-white picture.

Later in the series, Mendes also included a photo of herself doing her first photoshoot "post baby." The actress welcomed her daughter Amada Lee, whom she shares with partner Ryan Gosling, in 2016. They are also parents to daughter Esmeralda Amada, 10.

"2016 — I was hiding my second pregnancy from the public, made some pretty cool biz moves, and heartbreakingly, my brother John passed," Mendes wrote in her caption. "Thank God my youngest was born and saved the family. ♥️."

Although Mendes doesn't often speak about her family publicly, this past June, she was interviewed by New Beauty and asked by the outlet how she's spending her summer with her two daughters and partner Gosling, 45. The mom of two shared that while she doesn't quite know yet what they are going to get up to, she's hoping to just be by their side.

"I have no idea. We just go with the flow," said the mom of two. "I'm not blaming my kids, but summer is their time to be kids, and I'm really taking it in."

"Our little one turned 9 last week, and our oldest one is 10. I know these moments are fleeting," Mendes continued. "I just want to be with them. Whatever I'm doing, as long as I'm with them and Ryan, of course, that's where I'm happiest."

Mendes and Gosling have been together since 2011, after meeting on the set of their movie, The Place Beyond the Pines.

In September 2024, Mendes appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show and spoke with the TV host about how their feelings have shifted since becoming mothers.

"I felt a little lost when I had kids, in the sense where I was like, I don't really know how to do that job and be other people. What was it for you, may I ask?" Barrymore asked Mendes.

"Yeah, I felt, I actually didn't feel lost. I felt very clear, but then I felt lost, if that makes sense," Mendes shared. "Then, when it was like the cliché of, ok, well, who am I now after the kids can survive on their own?"

"I mean, they're only 8 and 10, but you know what I mean? They don't need me every second. It's a little different. But I love talking to my girls about anything, so I feel very fulfilled," added Mendes.
