Bill Belichick’s second season at North Carolina could not have started any better. The Tar Heels opened their 2026 season with a 15-10 victory over TCU, giving the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach one of the biggest wins of his brief college tenure so far. This was the first time that UNC played a game outside of the United States. The overseas classic was played in Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland on August 29.

After questions surrounded Belichick in the entire offseason following UNC’s 4-8 debut year, fans quickly flooded social media with comparisons to the legendary New England Patriots defenses he built in the NFL. Belichick took over defensive play-calling for the opener as defensive coordinator Steve Belichick was on medical leave. The decision paid immediate dividends as North Carolina forced turnovers, recorded three sacks, and held TCU to just 10 points.

One fan compared the performance to one of Belichick’s iconic NFL teams.

“Bill Belichick with a 2003 Patriots performance in Dublin.”

Another user wrote, “That actually looked like a Belichick-coached defense in the second half.”

“TCU may not win a game this year,” one fan joked.

Another added: “TCU might be the worst coached team I’ve ever seen.”

“Yikes, both teams will have a long year,” one wrote.

“A memorable win for the Tar Heels, especially on an international stage under Belichick,” another wrote.

Billy Edwards Credits UNC Defense After Dublin Victory

Speaking during ESPN’s postgame interview, Billy Edwards Jr. admitted he did not play his best football but praised the defense for keeping North Carolina in control throughout the night.

“I don’t think I played my best football, but hats off to the defense. They kept us in the whole game. Big-time stops in the fourth quarter. Multiple turnovers.”

Edwards finished 16-of-28 passing for 232 yards, while tight end Jelani Thurman led the offense with four catches for 94 yards.

He also highlighted the confidence the defense gives the offense every week in practice.

“As a quarterback, you can sit back and kind of have a little bit more relaxation knowing that guys like that are out on your defense, and they’re going to put up a fight like they did tonight.”

For a coach whose first UNC season ended with heavy scrutiny, the Dublin win offered an early reminder of how great a coach Belichick is.
